Developer financially backing candidate in Community Development District race

The Developer is financially backing a candidate in the Community Development District 6 race.

Two candidates are running for the supervisor’s seat currently held by CDD 6 Chair Sally Moss, who will step down this fall. The longtime supervisor is now serving on the Sumter County School Board.

Andrew Curtis

Andrew Curtis, a resident of the Village of Mallory Square, pre-filed in May for the seat. Curtis is a member of the Property Owners Association Board and he said his fellow members encouraged him to seek the CDD 6 seat. The POA has frequently been an irritant for the Developer.

Patricia Francis of the Village of Bridgeport at Miona Shores pre-filed June 7.

Francis has long been active in Republican Party politics in The Villages. Her husband, Mike Francis, was a Sumter County commissioner. He died in 2009.

She donated $250 to open her campaign account, according to records on file with the Sumter County Supervisor of Elections Office.

Pat Francis

MMM LLC, headquartered at 1020 Lake Sumter Landing in The Villages on July 6, contributed $1,000 to the Francis campaign. That address is the longtime headquarters for The Villages.

Richard Cole, of the Village of Polo Ridge, donated $100 to the Francis campaign. Cole has long been active in GOP politics in The Villages.

Curtis opened his campaign account on May 31 with a $250 contribution from himself. It’s the only money in the account.

CDD races are typically low-key affairs, with most candidates meeting with residents at postal stations.

Francis is the only CDD candidate on the ballot this fall to have received financial support from the Developer.

Francis also enjoys tremendous name recognition in The Villages, having long been active in organizations including Rotary.
