Wrong-way DUI driver lands back behind bars after violating probation

Amber Ruth Barkwell

A 24-year-old woman convicted last year of driving in the wrong direction while intoxicated has landed back behind bars.

Amber Ruth Barkwell of Ocala was being held this weekend without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.

At the time of her arrest last year, she told a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy she had gotten off work and drank a single martini. Barkwell had been pulled over after she was spotted driving in the wrong direction on U.S. 301. She failed field sobriety exercises and later provided two breath samples that both registered .178 blood alcohol content.

She was placed on probation for a year, lost her license for six months and ordered to perform 80 hours of community service.
