Wrong-way driver killed in head-on crash in Marion County

A wrong-way driver was killed Sunday night in a head-on collision on NE 58th Avenue in Ocala.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Bobby J. Eiland, 48, of Hernando, was driving north in the southbound lane just after 11:30 p.m. when his 2005 GMC Suburban slammed into a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Kyle Thomas, 18, of Silver Springs.

Eiland was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue paramedics. Thomas and a passenger in his car, 18-year-old Carolyn Scheib, also of Silver Springs, suffered serious injuries. Thomas was transported to UF Shands Hospital in Gainesville, while Scheib was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center. Another passenger in the car, two-year-old Athena Scheib, received minor injuries and was transported to Shands.

The report states that Eiland, Thomas and Athena Scheib were wearing seat belts or were properly restrained, while Carolyn Scheib was not.

The crash is still under investigation and it hasn’t been determined if alcohol was involved, the report says.
