Woman’s stolen credit card used in high-dollar purchase at Lady Lake Sam’s Club

A Sorrento woman’s stolen credit card was used to make purchases at Sam’s Club in Lady Lake.

According to a Lady Lake Police Department report, a man called officers May 10 to report that his girlfriend’s Mastercard, stolen from the Eustis area along with other credit cards, had been used at Sam’s Club to make purchases in the amounts of $1,829.72 and $4,782.28. The man told officers they became aware of the purchases when they were alerted by the credit card company.

The man also told officers that his girlfriend’s Discover Card was used for a $4,542.56 purchase and her American Express card was charged with $4,749.04, both in the Ocala area.

The officer spoke with the manager at the Lady Lake Sam’s Club, who provided him with transaction records for the purchase, as well as video from the in-store surveillance camera that showed two black males buying numerous items, including phone cards, men’s clothing and food. The video showed the two men entering the store at 10:29 a.m. on May 10 and using a self-checkout 23 minutes later.

The officer said the video wasn’t clear enough to positively identify the men. But a check of the Sam’s Club account number they used showed that it also had been used a day earlier at a store in Fort Myers. The last time it was used prior to that was in 2013, the report states, adding that the Lady Lake store manager said the account would be deactivated.

The woman was reimbursed for the fraudulent purchases by the credit card companies.
