A woman was arrested after she was caught with underwear stolen from Wal-Mart at Buffalo Ridge Plaza.
Erica Roy, 37, of Wildwood, was at the wheel of a maroon Chevy Lumina at 2:12 a.m. Wednesday when a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy ran the license plate and discovered it actually belonged on a silver Honda station wagon. Roy said she did not have a Florida driver’s license and handed the deputy a Connecticut identification card. The deputy found that Roy’s license had been suspended for failure to pay traffic fines.
A search of Roy’s purse turned up new underwear with pricetags still attached. Also in the purse were face masks, hair products and other miscellaneous cosmetics.
Roy showed the deputy a receipt from Wal-Mart, but it only showed that food items had been purchased. She claimed the items had been purchased at a dollar store.
Another deputy checked with Wal-Mart and surveillance video showed Roy in the store.
Merchandise was taken back to Wal-Mart where the pricetags were scanned, showing they had been taken from the store at Buffalo Ridge Plaza.
She was arrested on charges of driving while license suspended and petit theft.
A criminal history check revealed Roy had been convicted on a charge of larceny in 2006 in Connecticut.
She was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $1,500.
