Plenty of parties ring in 2018 in The Villages

Rock and roll oldies from DJ Ron Ratisher were pulsating.  The strobe lights were dazzling and reminiscent of a bygone disco. The dance floor was crowded with everyone from seemingly professional hoofers to those who should have remained seated.  Certainly, no one was complaining.  Rather they were enthusiastically enjoying the festivities with 260 of their closest neighbors and friends.

DJ Ron Ratisher got everyone up dancing.

Soon came the escalating sonic-boom of unified voices chanting the traditional New Year’s eve countdown of seconds as they watched a big screen broadcast from New York’s Time Square. This was followed by the even more deafening roar of “Happy New Year” as Villagers welcomed in 2018 at the Rohan Recreation Center.

Similar merrymaking was going on at four other recreation centers – but each had a different musical theme.  Lake Miona was featuring The Keichers with a variety of dance music; SeaBreeze hosted Marty and Liz’s ballroom music; while Bob and Lola Miller were entertaining their audience with country pattern partner dance. In addition to Rohan, Mulberry Grove also was rocking and rolling thanks to Johnny G.

“We didn’t want to travel too far,” said Maryann Mahoney, of the Village of Pine Hills. “Spending the evening in The Villages for New Year’s meant that we would be safe.”

Her sister Joanne Wesper agreed.

“But, we didn’t want to stay home.  This party was wonderful and all the people have been very friendly,” she said.

The Villages Recreation Department sponsored the multi-facility event.  The responsibilities at Rohan fell to Glen Mace.

“I usually work Sundays so I don’t mind working tonight, he said.  “I enjoy helping people and it’s kind of exciting watching everyone get into a festive mood. Besides, I asked my wife MaryJo to help out so we’re here together,” he added.

“This was a special evening because we were with good neighbors, the music was fantastic, and everyone (at each table) shared some great food,” said Margie Thomas, of the Village of Bonita. “This was our best New Year’s Eve since moving to The Villages eight years ago.”

Soon the late night began to turn into early morning, and the festivities came to a close. The weary revelers cautiously made their way home, many with one common New Year’s resolution: Be sure to order tickets early for next year’s party.

Friends enjoyed dinner at Katie Belle’s with entertainment by Norman Lee.
