Villager free on bond after golf cart DUI asks judge for permission to take cruise

Kathleen Mary Niesen

A Villager free on bond after a golf cart DUI arrest is asking a judge for permission to take a cruise.

Kathleen Mary Niesen, 57, of the Village of Calumet Grove, was arrested on the night of July 1 after a golf cart crash which occurred after she left Bonefish Grill. Niesen told deputies she struck a tree near the entrance to the golf cart path alongside County Road 101. She added that she was “fine.” Deputies invited her to participate in field sobriety exercises in the parking lot of New Covenant United Methodist Church. She took off her shoes, but was unable to walk the white line. She struggled through the remainder of the exercises. She later provided breath samples that registered .186 and .187 blood alcohol content.

She remains free on $1,000 bond.

Niesen is asking the judge in her case to grant her permission to take a cruise. Her itinerary has her sailing out of Cocoa Beach on Aug. 17 aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship bound for Key West and Cuba.

“Ms. Niesen’s bondsman has been notified of her intention to travel and he has no objections to her making the trip,” her attorney wrote in the motion on file in Sumter County Court.

The motion notes the cruise had been booked before Niesen’s arrest.

A status conference on Niesen’s case is set for Aug. 16.
