A Villager was arrested after crashing his golf cart into a fence along the multi-modal path.
Clayton Ludwig Schaefer, 73, of the Village of Sabal Chase, was being evaluated by EMS personnel when Sumter County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene at 6:37 p.m. Saturday on the multi-modal path just south of Stillwater Trail, not far from its intersection with Buena Vista Boulevard. The crash damaged the fence and landscaping that are owned by Community Development District 6.
A woman who lives nearby heard a “commotion” and spotted Schaefer and his golf cart.
A member of Sumter EMS advised a friend of Schaefer’s at the scene that Schaefer should request to be taken to the hospital or he would be spending the night in a “drunk tank,” the arrest report said. Schaefer was transported to The Villages Regional Hospital where he was medically cleared and then discharged.
Schaefer failed field sobriety exercises and provided breath samples that registered .230 and .238 blood alcohol content.
He was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center where bond was set at $2,000. He was also cited for careless driving.
