Village of Santo Domingo woman killed in weekend accident in Pinellas County

A Village of Santo Domingo woman died Sunday afternoon after a two-car collision in Pinellas County.

A 2017 Ford Explorer, driven by 74-year-old Villager Herbert Vajen was traveling south on U.S. 19 at about 4 p.m. Sunday when he made a left turn and hit a northbound 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE 43, driven by Alexa Abbate, 29, of Clearwater.

A passenger in Vajen’s vehicle, 75-year-old Janet Vajen of The Villages, was taken to Florida Hospital of North Pinellas where she later died from her injuries.

Herbert Vajen, and two passengers, Anthony Baker, 69, and Martha Baker, 49, both of Napoleon, Ohio, were taken to Bayfront Hospital with serious injuries.

Abbate, the driver of the Mercedes, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mease Countryside Hospital. Passengers in her vehicle, 29-year-old Cory Tallitsch of Sarasota and a 2-year-old from Clearwater not identified by law enforcement — were also taken to that hospital but were uninjured.
