Upstart Village Airport Van and Taxi on road to domination in Villages’ market

Remember the battle between David and Goliath?

David won.

When Dan McCarthy decided to get into the airport shuttle business in The Villages, it seemed he was taking on a giant with a slingshot.

He launched the Villages-to-Orlando International Airport route on Nov. 8, 2009. He had three passengers.

But he had a belief.

Faster. Cheaper. Better.

Today, it has earned him three quarters of the Villages-to-airport business.

Village Airport Van and Taxi has sprouted another route traveling from the Orlando airport to hotels on International Drive.

Faster. Cheaper. Better.

The whole system is fueled by a computer system that tracks every passenger, every shuttle down to the minute.

You can get from your doorstep here in The Villages to the Orlando airport for $35.

Now Village Airport Van and Taxi has 22 employees and 80 drivers. Each van driver is armed with a tablet computer providing the driver with all of the information he needs to get his passengers where they need to go.

Last year, the company transported 81,700 passengers.

“It’s all about good customer service,” McCarthy said. “It’s all about taking care of people.”

That extends to his drivers. McCarthy said he pays them better than his rivals.

The nerve center of Village Airport Van and Taxi is the dispatch post. The calming presence of pets helps everything flow smoothly.

Faster. Cheaper. Better.
