Trump and Putin – what just happened?

It’s hard to believe what has just occurred. Sometimes it feels like we’re living in an alternative universe.

The president of the United States has chosen to ignore and denigrate the findings of our national intelligence agencies regarding Russian meddling in the 2016 election and instead support Russian President Vladimir Putin’s disclaimer. Think about that.

Defense Intelligence Agency Director Dan Coats, the nation’s top intelligence officer, likened the past and continuing Russian cyberattacks to the terror threats preceding the 9/11 attacks. Think about that.

“The warning lights are blinking red again. Today, the digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack,” warned Coats.

Russian President Vladimir Putin shakes hands with President Donald Trump during their summit in Helsinki, Finland.

Digital infrastructure includes so much more than influencing votes – it is “everything in our personal and professional lives” including cloud services, software networking that manages electric grids, you name it. That’s digital infrastructure. Our country is paralyzed if it’s attacked. Think about that.

It is beyond stunning that Trump would side with Putin against his own government, against the people heading agencies he, himself, appointed. His job is not to represent himself. His job is to represent the United States. Think about that.

The definition of treason is “the betrayal of one’s own country by consciously or purposely acting to aid its enemies.” Think about that.

Way back when Trump was running for president, he said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and his people would still love him. That action would obviously have a negative impact on the person shot, but what he did Monday negatively impacts this country and every citizen in it. The president of the United States is a clear and present danger to our democratic republic. Think about that.
