Thomas ‘Tom’ Walthouse

Thomas (Tom) Walthouse, known to his friends as “Wally,” 84, of The Villages, FL, passed away on July 9, 2018, at Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care, The Villages, Florida. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 20, 1934, to the late Frank and Amelia Walthouse.

Tom is survived by his sister June Glenicki of Streamwood, Illinois, his wife of 58 years, Fran (Novak) along with his children Kathy (Dan) Englund of Cary, Illinois; Tom (Grace) Walthouse of Schererville, Indiana; Bob (Priscilla) Walthouse of Mililani, Hawaii. He was adored by his 4 grandchildren: Robert Englund, Sarah Englund, Jared Walthouse, and Lia Walthouse along with his many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

After graduating from high school, Tom served in the United States Army from 1953-1955 in Korea. Since he knew how to type, the last few months of the Korean War he worked as a clerk and served in a demolition unit. After the Korean War, he went to Japan and then back to the states. Tom received his BS in Education from Illinois State University and his Masters from Northern Illinois University. He was a high school teacher and coach in District 87, 88, and 214 for 34 years and had several state championship gymnastics teams. After retiring from District 214, Tom continued to judge high school and college gymnastics meets along with being an assistant gymnastics coach at Rolling Meadows High School. Tom was an international judge and a member of the Illinois High School Gymnastics Coaches Hall of Fame and the Frank J. Cumiskey National Gymnastics Judges Association Hall of Fame.

Tom retired to The Villages 19 years ago, and enjoyed golfing with his friends who followed him to The Villages from Illinois. He was extremely proud of golfing his age using right and left handed clubs along with several holes-in-one at The Villages.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Timothy Catholic Church in The Villages on Friday, August 3, 2018 @ 8:30 a.m. with burial to follow at Florida National Cemetery with Army Honors @ 11 a.m..
