Classic thriller ‘Wait until Dark’ well-presented by Tavares Community Theater

Don Simson

“Wait Until Dark” is an old stand-by play that is well-presented by the Tavares Community Theater.

Blind Susie Hendrix is conned by three criminals, Mike Talman (Joshua Hernandez), Carlino (Kevin Grogan) and Harry Roat (Earl Adams), into giving them a doll that was brought back from Canada by her husband, Sam (Charlie Halterman).

Unknown to Susie, the doll has hidden contraband that was given to Sam by a woman as he was leaving Canada to come home. In the meantime, the woman is murdered in the Hendrix’s apartment and the criminals will implicate Sam if Susie doesn’t give them the doll.

The cast of ‘Wait Until Dark,’ which is being put on by the Tavares Community Theater group.

But the doll was stolen by the upstairs little girl Gloria (Nora Grogan), who thought it was for her.

The plot thickens when Roat kills his partners and attempts to kill Susie for the doll. Susie places the entire apartment in darkness and a survival fight begins with her, being blind, having the advantage until a surprise event happens to foil her plan.

But does it? You will have to go see the play, which runs through May 27.

For true mystery fans, “Wait until Dark” is a classic and well-presented by the Tavares Community Theater. The small stage does not deter all the action that takes place and is well designed to represent a typical New York basement apartment.

“Wait Until Dark” is directed by Laney Clark. For tickets and information, call (352) 343-9944 or go to tavarestheater.org.
