The trench coat was a warning sign

To the Editor:

It is the gun that killed and wounded, but it is that breakdown of the American families that causes this to keep happening.

If the families took time each day to spend together, like at the dinner table every night, they might catch on to the things happening within their families. I know life is busier now, but we created that environment. We have to go back to basics and spend time talking and listening.

Why would your child wear a long trench coat every day to school in 90-degree weather? He should have been made to open his coat every day until he stopped wearing it.

Some people would call that harassment. Others would say it was his way of expressing himself and that should be allowed. I say it would have saved our children.

When something is way off the norm, it usually has a hidden meaning. Wake up, people. This is our time to shine, learn and listen to what our children are thinking and feeling. Life is hard, so give your kids and all kids an outlet for their pain. Way out of the norm, something is more than likely wrong.
