Synthetic surface considered for Villages dog park where grass has a tough time growing

The Amenity Authority Committee is considering changes at Paradise Dog Park after members received complaints about the lack of grass at the facility.

The discussion took place at Wednesday’s budget workshop.

Sam Wartinbee of District Property Management said the dog park on the Historic Side of The Villages is located in a grove of oak trees and it is difficult to get grass to grow there. He also noted that some of the big dogs can be hard on the limited areas that do have grass.

He went on to explain that the staff had looked at possible synthetic turf for the dog park. It would consist of a number of layers including a base layer that would be created to reduce bacterial infection.

Wartinbee said that the life expectancy of the synthetic coverage would be about five years depending on the amount of use.

The cost would be approximately $105,000 to install.

AAC Chairman Carl Bell said he did not think that the Town of Lady Lake would allow a synthetic surface for a dog park. Other commissioners indicated that they had talk to some of the dog owners who use the park.
