A Community Development District supervisor is calling for a crack down on signs used to advertise garage and estate sales in The Villages.
CDD 2 Supervisor Bart Zoellner on Friday described a recent estate sale that took place in his neighborhood.
“There were signs all over creation. There were balloons all over creation,” he said.
He objected to numerous “no parking” signs placed in yards by the estate sale company.
He said the signs were left up overnight.
“The neighborhood looked like a flea market,” Zoellner said.
Zoellner read into the record The Villages own “Conditions for Garage Sales:”
1. No signs; balloons on lamp posts are allowed.
2. All items must be wholly contained within the garage or carport, not on the lawn or driveway.
3. Homeowner having sale is responsible for any damage caused by increased traffic including, but not limited to, damage to irrigation heads, plants, shrubbery or curbing.
4. Sale is to be for a single household unless a fundraiser for a not-for-profit group in which case everything must be in one garage only.
5. No more than one sale in a 12-month period.
6. Homeowner is asked to advise Community Watch in advance of the sale so that they can staff for any additional neighborhood traffic (753-0550).
“Where was Community Watch?” he asked
Zoellner said Community Watch should take on an active role in the enforcement of the “conditions” laid out by the District.
District Manager Janet Tutt said Community Watch cannot remove signs from private property.
Complaints about signs should be directed to Community Standards. If a complaint is received, it will go through the normal enforcement process. If the deed violation is verified, the homeowner would have three days to come into compliance, and in this case, remove the sign.
“If Community Watch can’t do something about this, what are they doing?” Zoellner asked.
