On Sept. 22, the Sumter Special Olympics Golf Team opened the final competition and the opening ceremonies of the golf competition at Disney World.
Despite scheduling problems created by Hurricane Irma, 38 teams competed and competition was finished on Sept. 23.
Sumter County had one unified (18 holes) team that consisted of Jared and Matt Schmidt. The two shot a score of 110 on the Magnolia Golf Course to take the gold medal in their division.
The team had two squads in the unified (9 holes) division. Jessica Kirby and Susan Merz scored 55 on the Oak Trail Golf Course to take a gold medal in their division and the team of Torey Henderson and Alex Anthony shot a 56 on the Oak Trail Course to pull out the gold medal on the final hole in their division.
In the skills shooting at Magnolia Driving and Putting Range, Kenneth Torres took the bronze medal and Scott Heard took the gold medal in the pitching division.
