Sumter County EMS personnel seriously injured when ambulance hit by dump truck

A dump truck hit an ambulance Monday morning on U.S. 301 in Sumter County, leaving two men seriously injured.

The Sumter County EMS ambulance, was traveling northbound on U.S. 301 at NE 13th Avenue at about 10 a.m. when it pulled to the grass shoulder, activated the emergency lights, and made a U-turn into the path of a dump truck which had been traveling northbound on U.S. 301, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A Sumter County EMS ambulance was damaged in the crash on U.S. 301.

The man driving the ambulance, 22-year-old Michael Mahai of Eustis, was seriously injured and was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center. A passenger in the ambulance, 20-year-old Nicholas Fatolitis of Leesburg, was also transported to ORMC. A third man in the ambulance, 39-year-old Charles Dean of Spring Hill suffered minor injuries and was transported to Citrus Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the dump truck, 40-year-old Jorge Luis Rodriguez of Orlando, suffered minor injuries and was transported to South Lake Hospital.

Mahai was cited for making an improper U-turn.

The ambulance was making a U-turn on U.S. 301 when the accident occurred.
