Sumter County educator honored with national education award in Washington D.C.

Helen Christian was honored with the award in Washington D.C.

The Sumter County School Board has announced that Helen Christian is the 2018 recipient of the NAFEPA State Leadership Award.

Christian, director of Elementary Education for the Sumter County School District, represented the state of Florida on Monday at the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators (NAFEPA) conference in Washington, D.C.

I am truly humbled to be able to represent the hard work of all of the educators in Florida by receiving this award,” said Christian. “My goal is to support students, teachers, and families by providing guidance and resources.

Christian is a high school graduate of the Sumter County school district and became a teacher at Webster Elementary in 1988 where she later became principal in 2003.

Christian has experience working in many of the Sumter schools as a teacher, assistant principal and principal where she is known for her high standard of performance. 

“We are very proud that Mrs. Christian not only represented the state of Florida during the NAFEPA conference but the entire Sumter County School District,” said Superintendent Richard A. Shirley. “This award exemplifies her hard work, dedication, and commitment to ensuring equitable funding and positive results for all students.”
