‘Sudden Sam’ McDowell to sign autographs at Saturday show at Savannah

Sam McDowell, who was known as “Sudden Sam” during his Major League Baseball days, will be signing autographs at Saturday’s Sports Card and Collectible Show at Savannah Center.
The show will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
McDowell, who now lives in Clermont, played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball, with the first 11 coming for the Cleveland Indians before a 1971 trade to the San Francisco Giants, followed by stints with the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates. A six-time All-Star (1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1971), McDowell was primarily a starting pitcher during his major league career.
McDowell once appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated beside the headline “Faster Than Koufax?” A comparison to Sandy Koufax, the youngest player ever elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, was no small feat.
With so many grandchildren in town, this installment of the Sports Card and Collectible Show will offer special games for children. There will be games of card tossing and a putting contest in addition to other games.
Prizes will be awarded to the children taking part in the games.
There is no charge for admission or for autographs.
