State constitution panel deserves your attention

To the Editor:

With the constant drama coming out of Washington these days, it’s easy to forget that we have a government in Tallahassee, too. Right now, that government is in the midst of a rare process that could profoundly affect life in our state.
The Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) is a special body that meets every 20 years to propose changes to the state constitution. It has just advanced 37 proposals that could appear on the ballot in November. Like any amendment, CRC proposals need at least 60 percent support to pass.
I’ve already discussed Proposal 67, which would ban dog racing. A few of the other major proposals are:
• Proposal 4 would allow the state to give taxpayer funds to churches
• Proposal 29 would require employers to use eVerify
• Proposal 43 would put term limits on school boards
• Proposal 91 would ban offshore drilling
If you’re passionate about these or other issues, you can write to the CRC or speak to them at their upcoming public hearing in St. Petersburg.
