Souvenir samurai sword taken from elementary school student

Emerald Shores Elementary School

A school resource officer was called into action Tuesday after an Emerald Shores Elementary student brought a miniature samurai sword to school.

According a report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the student brought the souvenir-type knife to the school, located at 404 Emerald Rd. in Ocala, to show his friends. During the day, the student said, he was teased by two other students and threatened to stab one of them, the report states.

At the time, the miniature sword was in the student’s backpack in his classroom and not accessible. And the student said he wasn’t serious when he made the threat, the report says.

A short time later, the deputy took possession of the knife, which had a dull, pointed 8-inch blade. The weapon was turned over to school officials and the child’s mother was called to pick him up.

The report states that the school will handle the matter through its disciplinary process.
