Snowbird who sipped whiskey at square sentenced in golf cart ride on County Road 466

Samuel Deluca

A snowbird who sipped whiskey at the square and then took a golf cart ride on County Road 466 has been sentenced in connection with the case.

Samuel A. Deluca, 73, of Webster, N.Y. was at the wheel of a silver EZ-GO golf cart at 8:22 p.m. Feb. 6 on County Road 466 at Glen Hollow Way, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Deluca said he had left Lake Sumter Landing where he had consumed three house-brand whiskey drinks on ice. He said he takes medication for blood pressure and heart problems. He also said drinking worsens his vertigo.

He failed field sobriety exercises and provided breath samples that registered .189 and .186 blood alcohol content.

He was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.

Deluca pleaded no contest in the case earlier this month in Sumter County Court. He has been placed on probation for one year and ordered to perform 80 hours of community service.

Earlier in the year, a Pennsylvania man was arrested on a drunk driving charge after he was spotted driving a golf cart on the same stretch of County Road 466.  His case is still pending in Sumter County Court.
