Sinkholes threaten homes in Village of Calumet Grove

At least three sinkholes have opened up in the Village of Calumet Grove.

The largest of the three holes is about 35 foot deep by 18 feet across, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

The sinkholes, near a golf cart path behind homes on McLawren Terrace, have prompted the street to be blocked off to traffic. A section of the Torri Pines Nine has been closed at the Nancy Lopez Golf Course. A pond there is down several feet as a result of the sinkhole, and draining rapidly.

Two houses appear to be impacted and one resident said they have a large crack in their foundation.

Residents of the 17000 block of McLawren Terrace said they woke up at 3:10 a.m. to a loud “bang.” They called 911.

Soon, law enforcement was banging on residents’ doors, telling them to get out.

Notices went up at two homes, indicating they were unfit for habitation. Two additional homes have been evacuated.

Utilities have been shut off as a precaution.
