Shirley Ann Schmid, 72, of The Villages, FL, passed away on Monday, May 14, 2018 from complications due to Diabetes. Born on January 13, 1946 in Laurel, MS to the proud parents of Lavell & Audrey (Fregia) Cockrell.
Shirley served as a dental technician in the U.S. Army for almost 8 years and continued that occupation as a civilian after leaving the Army.
She was quite an athlete. In high school, she was considered one of the fastest runners in the 100 yard dash. When Jack and Shirley met, she was a tennis instructor, and learned golf from Jack. She loved bowling and that is how they met.
Her big passion was games of chance, so The Villages really suited her. She developed many friendships while playing Bingo, Bunco, Pokino and Poker.
She was also very well organized, so when asked to put a program together, she never turned down a challenge. She loved to help people and was strong to the end. She went peacefully after having been in the hospital for over 9 weeks.
Survivors include her beloved husband, John “Jack” Schmid and her children: son, Michael Schmid of Inverness, FL; her daughter, Terri Allred of Winston-Salem, NC; her daughter, Deidra from her first marriage; her sister, Sandra Wade of Laurel, MS and her three grandchildren: Bryce, Leah & Bailey
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 1511 Buenos Aires Blvd., The Villages with the family receiving friends for a gathering from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to her service. A luncheon reception will follow the Memorial Service.
