73-year-old woman on scooter killed in collision with pickup in Lake County

One driver was killed and another injured Sunday morning in a traffic crash near the intersection of State Road 33 and Edgewood Boys Ranch Road in Lake County.

Donna Newman, 73, of Winter Haven, was killed when her 2005 Honda scooter collided with a 2007 Honda pickup truck driven by 43-year-old David Currie of Groveland, a Florida Highway Patrol report states. Newman died at the scene and Currie was transported to South Lake Hospital in Clermont with minor injuries.

According the report, Currie was traveling northbound on SR 33 in front of Newman’s scooter. Currie’s truck veered off onto the east shoulder of the roadway before immediately making a U-turn. Newman’s scooter then struck the left side of the Honda pickup, the report says.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
