Dominika Egorova attends a Russian espionage school upon the recommendation of her uncle, Ivan Vladimirovich Egorova, an official in the Soviet hierarchy. The school will train her to use both her body and brain to hone skills necessary to carry out her assignments.
The student, played by Jennifer Lawrence (“Hunger Games”), learns quickly and is assigned to identify and track a mole within her own unit. She crosses paths with CIA agent Nathaniel Nash (Joel Edgerton), who operates in Russia, Finland and Hungary. While there is little chemistry between the pair, they do form a dalliance.
Dominika is the driving force for the action in this spy-thriller. Lawrence is a pleasure to watch as she jousts with Nate over the tricks of her trade.
“Red Sparrow” is what you should expect for a quick visit to the whirlpool of international espionage. On the down side, I hate Russian multi-syllable names. Visit the restrooms first, as this show runs two hours and 20minutes.
The screen play parallels the novel, which I am currently reading.
This movie gets a B-plus rating and is good entertainment. It is currently showing at the Old Mill Playhouse in The Villages.
