To the Editor:
I happened to come across the Aug. 12 Opinion piece by Marsha Shearer, “Making the case for open primaries,” mentioning Florida Fair and Open Primaries (FFAOP). As the director of FFAOP, I would like to let your readers know that my organization is currently circulating two petitions.
The first would implement a top two open primary where all candidates would appear on a single primary ballot with the top two vote getters moving on to the general election. The second simply precludes the use of public funds, facilities, and equipment for the nomination process of parties claiming to be private associations.
As 3.4 million Florida voters (making up 27 percent of the electorate) are barred from casting a vote in our primaries, it is no longer acceptable that they help fund elections from which they are excluded.
Readers interested in our efforts can find more information on our website or on our Facebook page.
