Villager rose to fame as ‘Tennessee Yodeler’

She’s graced the stage at the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry, but these days some of her greatest joy comes from doing volunteer work at Freedom Pointe.

“Sometimes they just want somebody to paint their nails,” said Village of Chatham resident Margo Smith Cammeron.

But back in the day, “The Tennessee Yodeler” was among country music royalty. Her No. 1 records still hang on the wall. “Little Things Mean A Lot.” “It Only Hurts For A Little While.” “Don’t Break The Heart That Loves You.”

In the 1970s and 1980s she made the rounds on “The Dinah Shore Show” and the “The Merv Griffin Show.” She appeared on “Hee Haw” and “The Hollywood Squares.”

Although ladies like Kitty Wells and Loretta Lynn had paved a road for their female successors, it still wasn’t easy.

When she finally hit the big time, Margo Smith (her professional name at the time) was in her 30s and married with two children, Jeff and Holly. (By the way, you probably know “Holly” today as the professional brunette who regularly appears in Lexus of Orlando commercials.)

Smith had a unique style. Not everybody could yodel.

She perfected the art of yodeling as a youngster, riding a horse alone in the country. She could yodel away and not be shy about it.

Today, her stage costumes are part of the memorabilia housed at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.

Because she was a song writer, she still gets royalty checks in the mail.

“You know 43 cents here. Fifty cents there,” she said.

In 2009, producers dusted off Smith’s “Shuffle Song” and featured it in the Hallmark Channel movie “Mending Fences” starring Angie Dickinson.

Smith got an $8,000 check in the mail for that one.

As a member of the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music, Smith still casts ballots for the performers who pick up all of the trophies in the awards shows of today, the Taylor Swifts, Brad Paiselys and Carrie Underwoods.

But today’s country music has gotten a little less country by her standards.

“Years ago, country singers were known for their distinctive voices. When they came on the radio, you instantly knew who it was,” she said.

Occasionally, Smith still steps out on the stage.

She will be performing from 6 to 9 p.m. July 6 at the American Legion Hall at the intersection of Rolling Acres Road and County Road 466. She will be joined by area entertainers Johnny McCullah and Jo Dee Marie.

Ticket information is available by calling the American Legion at 750-2099.  View a clip of Margo Smith singing “Shufffle Song” in the Featured Video section of www.villages-news.com

Why are irrigation systems running?

Have you seen the irrigation systems along the roadways running in The Villages and with all of the recent rain wondered, “Why?”

“This is necessary due to the high levels of storm water in our retention basins because of recent rains,” according to The Villages Community Development Districts.
