Tropical Storm Andrea credited with bringing 3-5 inches of rain to The Villages

Tropical Storm Andrea is being credited with bringing 3 to 5 inches of rainfall to The Villages in various locations.

Weather watchers around The Villages reported the various ranges of rainfall after Tropical Storm Andrea moved through the area Wednesday and Thursday.

It was the first named storm of the season.

 

Andrea forces Sumter County Chamber event back to June 19

Due to Tropical Storm Andrea, the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce  “Show Me The Money” business expo has been rescheduled for June 19.

The event will still take place at the Waterfront Inn at Lake Sumter Landing. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. that day.

Guests can browse exhibit tables by more than two dozen businesses, meet with potential suppliers and network with potential customers, all in a beautiful setting on Lake Sumter. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks are available, and a cash bar. All who attend are entered in a drawing for $100 and door prizes. Call the Chamber at 352-793-3099 for more information.

He moved to The Villages from Maitland, FL 20 years ago. He was an avid golfer, bowler, loved traveling and dining with his friends. He was active with the Boy Scouts, and a member of the Scottish American Society. He participated in the Scottish American Games. Robert C. “Bob” Pierce, 78, The Villages, FL died on Monday, June 3, 2013. He was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas and moved to The Villages in 1995 from Stow/Hudson, Ohio. He was retired from G. E. Lighting Division with 35 years of service. He loved western culture and history, was a civil war buff and a spelling bee champion. Bob worked at Glenview Country Club, enjoyed golf, and travel, especially motorhoming and was an avid reader. Survivors include his wife of 49 years Donna, The Villages; brother Harlyn Pierce, Ft. Smith, Arkansas; many nieces and nephews and other loving extended family. A memorial service will be held at the Lady Lake Chapel of Beyers Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Inurnment will be at Florida National Cemetery.

SUMMERFIELD – Barbara Blume, 76, passed from this life, Tuesday, June 4, 2013. Born in Plains, PA she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lila (Pope) Barrett. Barbara was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and home maker. Her family was her greatest joy and she was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren. They were the light of her life. She was a special person who always had a kind word and looked at the bright side of life. A soft spoken woman, she exhibited remarkable grace and faith. Listening to music was a favorite pastime as well as taking walks in her community. She enjoyed socializing with her neighbors and was a member of the Ladies Club at Stonecrest. Barbara was of the Protestant faith. She along with her husband Arnie came to Florida from Middle Island, NY in 2005. She leaves her husband of 56 years, Arnie Blume, son, David Blume of Coram, NY, daughter, Linda Dolan (Michael) of South Setauket, NY, brother, William Barrett of Scranton, PA, 2 grandchildren, Megan and Brian Dolan and Joanne D’Aguanno and Steven Bertolino and their families with whom she shared a special bond. The concrete cart path connecting the Morse Blvd. multimodal path to the Homewood parking lot is temporarily closed due to a parking lot expansion.

Alene Nancy Westgate, 64, The Villages, FL passed away on June 2, 2013 under the loving care of family and friends at The Villages Hospice House. Ms. Westgate was born on March 22, 1949 in Passaic, New Jersey to her parents Albert Nelson Westgate and Elma (Davies) Westgate. Ms. Westgate had worked for The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA before moving to The Villages in 2008. She is survived by a brother: Richard Westgate of Murfreesboro, TN; a sister: Paige Schlenker of Amelia Island, FL and several nieces and nephews. Thelma “CIS” Weber, 82, The Villages, FL died Tuesday, June 4, 2013. She was born March 4, 1931 in Covington, KY and moved to The Villages from Dayton, OH in 1992. She was a retired professional coupon clipper, a member of Sinclair Community College Dugout Club and a follower of the Sinclair Community College Baseball team which was managed by her grandson. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Jack Weber; son Doug (Vicki) Weber, Sherrills Ford, NC; daughter Stacy (John) Dintaman, Bettendorf, IA; brother William (Mary Ann) Fisk, Leesburg, FL; grandsons: Steve Dintaman, Dayton, OH; Michael Dintaman, St. Louis, MO and Alex Weber, Sherrills Ford, NC; granddaughters: Whitney (Justin) Brown, Huntersville, NC and Jackie Dintaman, Bettendorf, IA; and great grandson Austin Brown, Huntersville, NC. She was preceded in death by her grandson Brent Weber. A memorial service will be held at the Lady Lake Chapel of Beyers Funeral Home on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 3:00 PM. Golf Cart Bridge Now Open from Carrera Drive to De La Vista Postal Facility

The new golf cart bridge used to allow carts to cross from Carrera Drive to the De La Vista Postal Facility is now open. The cart path is a one-way path in which you can drive from Carerra Drive to the De La Vista Postal Facility.  When returning to Carrera Drive, you must take Morse Blvd.

Apartment complex near Villages sold for $30 million

Courtney Villages, a 356-unit multifamily apartment complex in Lady Lake, has been sold for $30.25 million.

GMC Property Management, based in Jacksonville, purchased the multifamily asset, which is 96 percent occupied. The apartment complex was sold by Orlando-based Contravest.

The apartment complex is home to many working professionals connected to industries serving residents of The Villages.

“The property is well-positioned to benefit from the growing demand for rentals in the immediate area,” said Patrick Dufour of the ARA Central and North Florida-based sales team, which helped broker the sale.

The apartment complex is located on County Road 466 between Rolling Acres Road and Highway 27/441.
