Nugent fights against National Guard furlough days

U.S. Rep. Rich Nugent
U.S. Rep. Rich Nugent

U.S. Rep. Rich Nugent, who represents in Congress a sizable portion of The Villages, has led a successful fight to persuade his fellow House members to end furlough days for National Guard maintenance technicians.

The Republican lawmaker tacked on an amendment to a recent Pentagon appropriation bill to end the National Guard maintenance workers’ furlough days.

“Sequestration” has forced unpaid furlough days throughout the ranks of federal employees.

Nugent argued that he had “devastating and immediate concerns” that Florida’s National Guard aircraft and vehicles were not being properly maintained due to the furlough days.

The matter moves onto the Senate for consideration.

167 APPLICANTS IN CFL FALL 2013 SEASON;

LEAGUE DRAFT WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14TH

This week’s featured game:

10:00  METLIFE  @  HARLAN    FIELD 2

The odds were 7-1 that MetLife and Harlan would hook up in our random draw post season.  But as the top two teams during the regular season, it is a great draw and should be a great game.

MetLife beat Harlan 13-9 in the seventh week of the season.

Rookie Ed Kordus leads the Harlies with a impressive .781BA, and returning CFLer Ed DeMaio is tops with 26 ribbies and a 1.529 SLG%.

Another CFL rookie, Don Mulneix, leads the Metsies in all offensive stats including a hot .750BA and 25 rbi’s.

Offensive and defense season stats of these two teams are nose to nose.  Harlan has the home field and will be motivated to knock off the Regular Season Champs.  They will be missing the services of Kirby Campanelli who according to league rules cannot sub against MetLife, the team that is protecting him.  But they are picking up Fred Bruce, a star CFL veteran who has returned to CFL play this season and is returning in the Fall.

Both teams have top shelf pitchers in Jim Glover and Harold Holiman.

This is a pick-em.

Commish calls it: Harlan 15; MetLife 14

Woodworking Shop parking lot undergoing improvements

0

Work is currently under way to improve the parking lot at the Woodworking Shop located off of Rolling Acres Road.

The parking lot is being expanded, a section of cart path is being installed, and a flag pole will be added.  While this work is completed, those in the area are asked to use caution and follow all directional signage.

Parking for vehicles is being routed inside the fence at the waste water treatment plant and golf carts can park behind the Woodworking Shop.  The work is estimated to be complete in September.

Emily Graham chases country music dream

Emily Graham

If you are lucky enough to catch Emily Graham singing here in The Villages, you are probably going to be in a position to some day say, “I knew her when.”

The Villages High School student with the powerful voice has a dream. She wants to be a country singer.

Grounded in faith and family, she knows it’s a long, hard road to Nashville. But she’s already putting in the day-to-day, detailed work it takes to get there.

She been working with a vocal coach and taking the stage with popular Villages singer Garrett Miles.

In late September, she and Miles will be moving up to the bigger stage of the Gulf Coast Jam in Panama City.

She remains a simple country girl, living on a bit of property with her parents, Ted and Shea Graham and little brother Clay. They have 23 cows and four donkeys. She still loves going fishing with daddy. She regularly sings at her church, New Covenant United Methodist.

She’s got a “back-up plan” and plans to study nursing, just like her mother did. She is still a pragmatist.

At a recent performance with Miles at Brownwood Paddock Square, fans Jim and Mary Courtney of the Village of Calumet Grove came by to lend their support.

“What a girl she is. She is something else,” said Jim Courtney. “We love her.”

Before moving to The Villages, the family lived in Dublin, Ga.

Not so long ago, Emily and the family went back to Dublin where she gave a concert for friends and family.

She picked material that resonated with that crowd like Miranda Lambert’s “The House that Built Me.”

“It was very emotional being back there,” Graham said. “I know where I want to go. But I will always remember where I have been.”
