The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office issued 82 golf cart citations April 10 to July 8.

Between April 10 and July 8, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office  issued 580 traffic citations in the Sumter County portion of The Villages, according to a quarterly report presented to the Village Community Development Districts 1-3 and 5-8.

In addition to that, during the same time, the sheriff’s office issued 82 golf cart citations during that same time period.

The vehicle citations ranged from items such as unlawful speed and improper braking to not wearing a seat belt.

However, more than 65 percent of the citations issued to golf carts were for running a stop sign, and more than 18 percent of the citations were for operating a golf cart without a registration, which is issued when a golf cart exceeds the 19 mph speed limit.

The sheriff’s office reminds Villagers to obey all traffic rules — no matter what vehicle you are in.

Her nickname may be Tiny, but her accomplishments on the athletic field are far from it.

Villager Madelaine ‘Tiny” Cazel set a record in the javelin toss Wednesday in the National Senior Games taking place in Cleveland. To set the record and earn a gold medal, Tiny threw for 84 feet. She competes in the 75-79 age division.

On tap today for Tiny are the 50-yard dash and discus.

Ryan Beighley, another well known Villages athlete, won silver in the men’s 85-89 individual medley. Marty Beighley claimed gold in the women’s 70-74 long jump.

The National Senior Games are taking place at Cleveland, Ohio and 127 Villagers are there competing for medals.

Nearly 11,000 athletes – ages 50 to 101 from all 50 states – will compete in 19 sports during the 2013 Games. One of the largest recurring multi-sport events in the United States, the Games will draw nearly 30,000 people to the Cleveland area between July 19 and August 1, and the estimated economic impact is $35 million. Medal-contending competitions for the 2013 Games include pickleball, archery, badminton, basketball, bowling, race walk, road race, cycling, golf, horseshoes, racquetball, shuffleboard, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track & field, triathlon and volleyball. Bocce ball and disc golf competitions will be held as demonstration sports during the event.

AAC member wants gate connectivity for better protection

0

The Amenity Authority Committee has directed Villages Community Center District staff to look into a long-range project that would boost connectivity at Villages gates to fight crime and protect residents.

“Prevention is better than cleaning up afterwards,” AAC member Carl Bell said in presenting his ideas to fellow board members at a budget workshop Wednesday.
“It is clear we have some unsavory characters coming into our community,” Bell said.
He said that Community Watch is currently receiving one to four “Be On the Lookout” warnings each week from local law enforcement. Or there might be a Silver Alert or search issued for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease.
“Currently, if we have an image like a license plate we have to Xerox it and drive it by (community watch) truck to the gate attendants,” Bell said.
In all there are 37 gates with 11 of them staffed.
It would be far more efficient if each gate had the latest connectivity, he said.
That might include an iPad or other tablet and printer.
“Once upon a time you had a cell phone. Now you have a smart phone,” Bell said.
He pointed out there is no single dedicated “police force” for The Villages. Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and Lady Lake Police provide law enforcement for The Villages.
“We have some responsibility to take care of ourselves,” he said.
He pointed to a recent publicized report indicating that some Villagers have an annual income of $98,000.
“When you start publicizing an annual income of $98,000 you could be come a target. We owe it to ourselves to protect ourselves,” Bell said.
AAC members directed Tutt and district staff to research options and come back with information at a future meeting.
