Overturned car hauler blocks traffic for three hours on Florida Turnpike in Sumter County

An overturned car hauler blocked traffic for three hours early Thursday morning on the northbound lanes on the Florida Turnpike in Sumter County.

Vernon Lee Cribbs, 58, of St. Augustine, had been driving a semi towing an empty car hauler at 5 a.m. Thursday when it drifted from the inside into the outside lane, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. To avoid a collision, Cribbs steered to the outside shoulder at which point the trailer portion of the vehicle collided with the outside barrier wall. The impact caused the trailer to separate from the truck. The trailer, transporting a variety of miscellaneous supplies, overturned and blocked the northbound lanes of travel for three hours. Cribbs, uninjured, drove the tractor to a controlled stop.
