The Opera Club of The Villages continues to make a huge impact on the lives of young performers.
Throughout the year – for over two decades – these dedicated Villagers work hard to raise money and advance the careers of gifted musicians. It goes far beyond their passion for opera; it’s about dedication to the arts and giving today’s students an opportunity to pursue their dreams.
That’s why the Harold S. Schwartz Scholarships mean so much. It was evident Thursday night at Laurel Manor Recreation Center when $51,000 in scholarship money was awarded.
“Music is empowerment for students, it energizes them and gives them confidence,” said Gerri Piscitelli, president of the Opera Club. The club’s scholarship committee is headed by Pauline Pan and Mary Boczkowski.
The late Oscar Feliu was one of the founders of the Opera Club. Feliu, along with Maestro Bill Doherty, were driving forces for the Opera Club’s scholarship work. The club has donated nearly $400,000 since the Schwartz Scholarships began in 1997.
“The goal is to help talented young people,” Doherty said. “And there was a lot of talent in this year’s scholarship winners.”
Here are the winners:
Julia Sills, flute, Mt. Dora High School, $12,000.
Andrew Becker, alto sax, Mt. Dora High School, $12,000.
Mick Pepper, trombone, Tavares High School, $10,000.
William Harwood, Villages Charter High School, $8,000.
Casey Marden, trumpet, Taveras High School, $6,000.
The Opera Club also presented $1,000 “Encouragement Awards” to Genesis Heart, soprano, Villages Charter School; Joshua Alexander Plante, Baritone, Van Guard High; Daniel Pino Garcia, Baritone, Trinity Catholic.
On May 22, Robert Gonzales of the Villages Charter High School will receive a $3,000 Oscar Feliu Award, sponsored by Joe and Diana Arlt, of the “Showcase of Talent” shows.
