Ocala man dies from injuries suffered in hit-and-run at Leesburg mall

A 27-year-old Ocala man died from injuries suffered in a hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning at the Leesburg mall.

Michael Roberts was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center after suffering critical injuries in the hit-and-run accident at 12:54 a.m. Saturday at Via Entertainment at 10401 U.S. Hwy. 441, according to the Leesburg Police Department. Roberts died late Saturday afternoon from his injuries.

The initial investigation revealed a 2018 Silver Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling north in the parking lot of Via Entertainment. As the vehicle traveled north, it struck a 2011 white Chevrolet SUV, driven by Lawanda Alteen, 37, of Center Hill and then struck Roberts and  26-year-old Matthew Wilkerson of Citra. Both men were pedestrians.

Wilkerson refused medical assistance at the scene.

The driver of the 2018 silver Chevrolet pickup truck fled the scene.

Traffic Homicide Investigators from the Leesburg Police Department’s Traffic Unit are investigating the crash and are asking anyone with information to contact them (352) 787-2121.
