New square dance group invites Villagers to join in, no parter required

A brand new square dancing group is forming in The Villages.

The Southern Villages Square Dancing Group organized by Judith Mason, a resident of the Village of Osceola Hills, recently held its first meeting.

“We had a great time,” said Mason. The group is open to beginners. Martz who square danced in Illinois and New Jersey decided to take action when she realized there was not a square dancing group in her area.

“It is a fun activity, a great way to meet nice people and a wonderful way to get exercise,” said Mason.

The group will meet every Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. alternating between Bradenton and Sterling Heights recreation centers.

“I really encourage anyone who is interested in joining to come this week or next because right now we are learning the steps that lead into the dances,” Mason said.

She emphasized that you do not have to come to this group with a partner.

“We will partner people up, everyone will have a chance to dance and enjoy the fun of this social activity,” said Mason.

She recommends wearing comfortable shoes that are secure to the feet. Tennis shoes are fine. She does not recommend wearing sandals or shoes that your feet just slide into.

The cost is $5 per person per session. The money goes to pay the caller. Mason looks forward to seeing many new faces.

“We had sixteen at are first meeting which is great,” said Mason, “but the more the merrier, we are in a room that can easily hold fifty or sixty people.”

If you have any questions about the new square dancing group you can contact Judith Mason at (352) 571-4214.
