We need more from Congress than denial and inaction

To the Editor:

Should a documented, mentally disturbed youth have the right to purchase an automatic weapon?  Granted, we have a Second Amendment and we are a free society, however, with freedom comes responsibility.
The protesters, Chuck Todd, and the rest of the left-leaning media need to understand that this is not President Trump’s fault.  That said, he is our president and I long for him to take some leadership on this topic and get our lawmakers moving. See bumpstock legislation for an example of our do-nothing Congress in action.
Anything President Trump does will be more than what his predecessor did to curb the violence on the streets of many of our inner cities. I get the slippery slope argument, and agree on some level, as more government is typically not the answer to our problems. This one is unique, however.
Granted, the NRA is quite powerful, but then again so was the tobacco lobby at one point in time. We finally acknowledged that cigarettes are directly linked to health issues. Does that mean that we confiscate everyone’s cigarettes?  No, but we don’t sell them, legally, to minors and we put a warning label on the side of the packet.  There, something was done and over time, cigarette smoking declined.  Get after it, Congress.  You all are very well paid and should be able to come up with something apart from denial and inaction.
