Minneola woman survives harrowing crash into Lake Harris

Nicole Bankston, of Minneola, escaped serious injury Wednesday when her car crashed through the Howey-in-the-Hills bridge embankment and plummeted into Lake Harris

A Minneola woman escaped serious injury this morning when her car crashed through the Howey-in-the-Hills bridge embankment and plummeted into Lake Harris.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Nicole Bankston, 35, was traveling north on State Road 19 when she swerved and hit a curb after thinking she saw something in the roadway. Bankston overcorrected, causing her 2015 Nissan Altima to strike the west barrier of the bridge and fall into Lake Harris, the report says. Bankston was able to get out of the car before it became fully submerged.

Two people who have not been identified to the FHP came to Bankston’s aid and pulled her from the water. The crash is still under investigation.
