Marsha Shearer’s Opinion piece contained some whoppers

To the Editor:

Ms. Shearer just wrote another of her regular “bash Trump” opinions. Somehow, the stock market and economy were supposed to be connected with Trump not being able to buy respect.
Her piece did contain some whoppers.
“…there has never been a president in recent history who lacked so much in terms of character.”
Sorry, Marsha, but that would only be acceptable if one could ignore Obama and the Clinton of later years and escapades. And your point about his lack of character not mattering to his supporters is every bit as applicable to the Obama and Clinton supporters. Closely related, although she never did succeed to her self- and Party- and MSM-annointed role as president, the country had to choose Trump over a person many considered to be even more reprehensible and lacking in character.
Using an ABC poll to measure anything seems to me to be a waste of time. The last election shows just how capable the MSM pollsters are. Right up to the last minute, they were all touting Hillary. Only problem is… they weren’t asking the people who actually voted. Across the board, their methodology relied on past voting patterns to select their samples.
“It’s striking that as much money as Trump has, he cannot buy what is really, ultimately, the most important: respect.”
I think this whopper shows where your bias is almost blinding. I don’t really think he is out to buy respect at all!
It often seems to me that the liberal / progressive segment, which is where the Democrats get a lot of their support, seems to think that you can get whatever they want by buying it… often with other people’s money. When I consider how Obama led, it was buying and selling and peddling influence. But the real support for this idea is the Clintons – from Bill’s presidency through Bill and Hillary’s “foundation” and her presidential run.
Incidentally, I’m an Independent. So, I’m not blindly tied in to support one side or automatically rail against the other side. I did not see Trump as a sterling character, but after Obama and the prospect of Hillary [and Bill] it was definitely the lesser of evils. A year later, I still don’t think Trump is a sterling character, and I still wish we could somehow find a more “presidential”  demeanor. But, I do have respect for many of the things he is trying to do, and, increasingly, for some of his methodology. When I consider the amount of excessive vitriol and abuse and downright illegal obstruction he has been facing, I think it’s amazing he can keep his eye on targets.  Of course, all the fanatics of both blind extremes can’t see this – you’re all distracted by what he says, rather than what he does.
I do agree with Marsha’s truism: there are still some things money cannot buy. Respect is earned, not bought. Trump is earning some respect. President Bill came to lose my respect. President Obama never came close to earning it. Presumptive president Hillary never came close, and has been losing even more since the election.
