Man flees Summerfield Wal-Mart after attempt to steal cartload of groceries foiled

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy was called to the Summerfield Wal-Mart on Monday after a man attempted to steal a cart-full of groceries and merchandise.

When the deputy arrived at the store, located at 17961 U.S. Hwy. 27/441, a loss prevention officer told him that a man had left a full shopping cart in one of the freezer aisles close to the exit. He said the man went outside and sat in his car for a few minutes before coming back to his cart.

The loss prevention officer said the man then started walking with the cart toward the exit, past the cash registers and the sensors at the exit doors. The loss prevention officer added that when he confronted the man, he abandoned the cart and ran into the sliding doors, causing them to swing open. He said the man then fled to his vehicle in the parking lot, a sheriff’s office report states.
