Man arrested after taking golf cart on wild ride down Morse Boulevard

David Burton Carrigan

A man was arrested Monday night on a charge of driving under the influence after taking a golf cart on a wild ride down Morse Boulevard.

A caller alerted the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office to a green golf cart at about 8:30 p.m. that had been traveling in the vicinity of Morse Boulevard and Odell Circle. It was being followed by the citizen who alerted law enforcement. The citizen, traveling in a blue Pacifica, had its emergency lights activated as it trailed the golf cart.

The golf cart then left Morse Boulevard, drove over a curb and got onto the multi-modal path.

A deputy tracked the non-Street Legal, unregistered golf cart to a location behind the Shell station at Colony Plaza.

The driver of the golf cart was identified as 57-year-old David Burton Carrigan of Summerfield. A half-empty Busch beer was found in the cupholder of the golf cart. Carrigan was unsteady on his feet and had to use the steering wheel of the golf cart for support, according to an arrest report.

He failed field sobriety exercises and used vulgar language to taunt the deputy making the arrest.

“You ain’t about nothing, but you about something,” Carrigan told the deputy.

Carrigan refused to submit to a breath test.

A check revealed Carrigan has three prior DUI arrests and that his license has been permanently revoked.

He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $21,500 bond.
