Deputies and police officers from throughout Sumter County came out in large numbers on Wednesday to take part in this year’s Law Enforcement Torch Run.
In addition to personnel from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Wildwood Police Department, Sumter Correctional, Coleman Federal Correctional and the probation and parole bureau also participated in the fundraiser to raise awareness for Special Olympics. And the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office traffic unit and SECO Energy offered assistance throughout the event.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness campaign for Special Olympics. Deputies and officers from throughout the country carry the Flame of Hope to honor Special Olympians from their area and those from throughout the world. And each year, more than 5,000 law enforcement officers carry the torch on a 1,500-mile relay through Florida’s 67 counties.
