Larry Lasky, of The Villages, FL, died December 20, 2017 at Buffalo Crossings assisted living in The Villages following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
With his late wife, Joan, Larry founded The Villages Pittsburgh Club in 2003 and served with her as co-president until late 2016, when he entered a Leesburg nursing home. Joan died in February 2017 following a lengthy battle with cancer, after which Larry was relocated to the newly opened Buffalo Crossings facility. Larry was a Pittsburgh native and a science teacher in Pittsburgh Public Schools for 30 years, including being named “Teacher of the Year” at one point, his sister-in-law Rose Haverlack (also a Villager) reported.
“Without Joan and Larry Lasky, there probably never would have been a Pittsburgh Club in The Villages,” said club President Joe Walker. “Nor would there probably have been a Three Rivers Club, which was was launched with the Laskys’ help after the Pittsburgh Club grew too large to accommodate new members. That these two clubs have thrived over the years is a fitting tribute to the Laskys’ love of their hometown and dedication to keeping the ‘Steel City’ spirit alive here in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown. We will carry on, but will never be the same without them.”
Larry was an avid golfer for 50+ years, loved music, dancing (he and Joan met at a dance), travel, gardening, sweets and, like most Pittsburghers, the Steelers, Ms. Haverlack reported. Â “He had season tickets to their games,” she added. Â “Generous to a fault, Larry gifted those season tickets to a neighbor before heading south” from their home in the Pittsburgh suburb of Penn Hills.
A funeral mass for Larry Lasky, founding co-president of The Villages Pittsburgh Club, will be Wednesday, January 3, at 8:30 a.m., at St. Timothy’s R.C. Church, 1351 Paige Place, in The Villages, followed by a celebration of life in the church social hall.
