The Lady Lake Little League will start its season on Feb. 17, one week before the Major Leaguers play their first spring training game.
This year the Lady Lake Little League is blessed with a new concession stand. The old stand was torn down a couple of seasons ago after more than 30 years of service to the community.
The concession stand is vital to the Little League as revenue from the stand helps finance the leagues expenses.
Amanda Parsons is the president of the Lady Lake Little League which is entirely staffed by by volunteers, including both coaches and umpires. She says that the league, which was founded in 1995, serves more than 200 local children and no child is turned away from playing because they cannot afford the registration fee.
The league has two seasons, one in the spring and one in the fall. Prior to the demolition of the old concession stand, the league would hold tournaments in the park which helped defray some of the costs. Without the concession stand, the past couple of years have strained the league’s finances.
The league and park district have tried to salvage some of the old equipment, but much of it is worn out. Lady Lake has had explosive growth and the increased use of the park made the new building a necessity. It was built through impact fees and it is now up to the league to set up the kitchen. The new facility has a room for the league’s equipment and they are also seeking a used golf cart to help move equipment to the multiple fields during the season.
