Jury renders verdict in Villager’s golf cart DUI arrest after night of drinking at City Fire

Robert Lamar Burnham

A Villager put his fate in the hands of a jury after his arrest last year on a charge of driving under the influence after a night of drinking at City Fire.

Robert Lamar Burnham, 65, of the Village of El Cortez, was found guilty by the jury on March 8 in Sumter County Court.

He was ordered to serve two days in jail, will lose his license for six months, has been placed on probation for one year and ordered to perform 80 hours of community service. Jurors dined on a meal from Waller’s Restaurant in Bushnell while deliberating. The total tab was $72.69.

Burnham was driving in his golf cart at 9:45 p.m. July 8 when he ran through a flashing stoplight at Canal Street and Old Mill Run at Lake Sumter Landing, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy making the traffic stop asked Burnham if he had been drinking. Burnham admitted to drinking eight beers at City Fire.

He failed field sobriety exercises and later provided breath samples registering .095 and .087 blood alcohol content.
