A convicted criminal who stole jewelry while working at job sites in The Villages, has been sentenced to two years in state prison.
Michael Allen Evans, 49, had been working for Integrity Electrical Contracting in 2016 when he first drew suspicion when a Village of Duval woman reported that $13,500 worth of jewelry was missing from her bedroom. Evans subsequently was arrested at a job site in the Village of Fernandina. Once the story broke, other Villagers who had missing jewelry and had work done by the same company, began contacting the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Some Villagers went to pawn shops and bought back the jewelry Evans had stolen.
At the time of his arrest, Evans said he needed the money to feed his drug habit.
Last week in Sumter County Court, Evans pleaded no contest to multiple charges of grand theft. He will spend two years behind bars with the Florida Department of Corrections.
Last year, Evans’ ex-wife wrote a letter to the judge in his case, encouraging a stiff penalty. In the letter, she described her ex-husband’s drug use, criminal activity and neglect of their children. You can read her entire letter at this link: Mary Evans Letter to Judge William Hallman III
