Intoxicated man carrying cooler arrested not far from Lake Deaton Plaza in The Villages

Duffy Joe Martinez

An intoxicated man carrying a cooler was arrested not far from Lake Deaton Plaza in The Villages.

Duffy Joe Martinez, 51, of Wildwood, was spotted walking with the cooler at 10:40 p.m. Tuesday on State Road 44 at Morse Boulevard, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy asked Martinez what he was doing walking on the side of the road at that late hour.

“I walked to the store to buy beer,” Martinez told the deputy.

Martinez then sat down on the cooler.

A pocket of the cooler was unzipped and a deputy spotted what appeared to be a smoking device. Martinez told the deputy it was a marijuana bong.

The deputy inspected the bong and found it had a burnt residue that field tested positive for marijuana.

Martinez was arrested on a charge of possession of drug equipment. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $1,000 bond.

Martinez had been arrested last year after stuffing a 16-ounce beer into his pants at Publix at Lake Deaton Plaza.
