Intoxicated grandfather arrested after reportedly drinking and driving with grandson

Gary Francis Madden

An intoxicated grandfather who claimed he had been giving his grandson a driving lesson was arrested after attacking a police officer.

Officers responded Thursday night to the clubhouse at Parkwood Oaks in Wildwood. They found 70-year-old Gary Francis Madden and his grandson who both scuttled to a PT Cruiser when they saw police approaching, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

It was determined that Madden had allowed the child to consume alcohol and drive a car without a license.

Madden claimed he was giving the child a “driving lesson.”

As police officers approached, both Madden and the grandson attacked a sergeant. Madden was taken to the ground and handcuffed.

Madden is facing charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, disorderly intoxication, cruelty to a child and resisting a police officer.

He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $12,500 bond.
