Incumbent Marion County commissioners to face challengers this year

Three Ocala residents filed paperwork this week to run for office in Marion County.

Write-in candidate Joe Brown is seeking the District 2 seat on the Marion County Board of County Commissioners currently held by Chairman Kathy Bryant, a Republican who was raised in Marion County. Another Republican, Michael Crimini, a physician assistant and owner of Express Care in Belleview and Leesburg, also seeks the District 2 seat, as does Democrat Helen Dueno.

To date, Bryant, who is running for her third term on the commission, has raised $90,290.73 in monetary and in-kind contributions and has spent $10,264.89 on her campaign. Crimini has raised $82,698.21 and spent $17,380.23. Dueno has raised $30 and Brown hasn’t raised any money.

On Monday, write-in candidate Deanna Morey filed paperwork to run for the District 4 county commission seat held by Republican Carl Zalak III, who is running for re-election. Retired Marion County Sheriff’s Capt. Eddie Leedy also is seeking the office.

To date, Zalak has raised $84,850 and spent $15,789.85, while Leedy has raised $16,210 and spent $3,201.31. Morey hasn’t raised any money toward her campaign.

Also on Monday, Jane Moerlie filed to paperwork to challenge incumbent Angie Boynton for the District 4 seat on the Marion County School Board. Boynton is seeking a third term and Nancy Thrower also is running for the post. All three candidates have no party affiliation.

Boynton has raised a total of $3,905 and hasn’t spent any on her campaign. Thrower has raised $8,648.26 and spent $6,622.33. Moerlie hasn’t raised any money or in-kind contributions.

The upcoming primary election will be held Aug. 28, followed by the general election on Nov. 6. The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 9 at 5 p.m.
