Homeless woman arrested after violent altercation in gas station checkout line

Diane C. Hargrove

A homeless woman was arrested after a verbal altercation turned violent Wednesday afternoon in the checkout line of a Silver Springs gas station.

According to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office report, Diane C. Hargrove, 53, was taken into custody at the Marathon Gas Station at 5245 E Silver Springs Blvd. after grabbing another woman by the wrist and twisting her arm.

Hargrove told deputies that she was in the checkout line when a woman in blue jeans and a black shirt used a racial epithet to describe her. Hargrove also told the deputy that she had to restrain another woman in line.

The victim told deputies that she was in line behind Hargrove, who was getting ready to purchase a few items. She said Hargove started arguing with another woman and then tried to “go after” her. The victim said she stepped in-between the two and that’s when Hargrove grabbed her and twisted her arm, the report says.

The other woman involved in the confrontation and the store’s clerk both confirmed that Hargrove grabbed the victim’s wrist and twisted her arm. Both also said that no one used a racial slur.

Hargrove was transported to the Marion County Jail and charged with battery. She was held on $1,000 bond and is due to appear in a Marion County courtroom on July 24 at 8 a.m.
